Hare Krishna Cab

Friday, 23 June 2006, 1:18 am

The taxi ride tonight was a bit surreal. At first, I thought I was hearing some pseudo church music along with the cab’s two-way radio. Then I realized that the music was coming from the car stereo. The cab driver was playing music with nothing but “Hare Krishna” in the lyrics. Well at least those were the only words I can understand at the time. And.. yes.. he was even singing along. I recorded it on my phone just so I can tell myself when I get home that I wasn’t just hearing things.

Upon getting home and doing some research, it seems that what I heard was the Hare Krishna mantra with some active instrumentation. The music felt peacful and seemed apt for meditation. So I wonder if the driver is part of the movement or he just appreciates the music. The way I remember his hair though would suggest the former.

Hahahahaha, there are some Katipunan trikes with Hare Krishna stickers on them. It’s nice to read the mantra out loud and have a good retarded laugh.

hare krishna is everywhere in katipunan. there’re two guys who ask for donations in exchange for stickers wearing shady white outfits and messenger hats.

Funny enough, I live in a country where there is a great possiblity that some of its citizens are part of the movement.. yet, I have not yet encountered a cabbie who has put in a CD (they don’t have tapes here) of the Hare Krishna mantra. But I have read about it. That must have been a cultural enlightenment on your part. What an interesting experience. Thanks for sharing this! =)

Hare Krishna reminds me of their diet: meat that are veggies.

@helga: I don’t I ever got to ride on any of those trikes. Haha!

@Euri: I rode the cab from Shangri-La. Hehe

@aaron: I don’t remember anything like that when I was frequent in Katipunan.

@Marz: Yes it was enlightening and quite refreshing I must say. I wasn’t weirded out by the incident. It actually got me curious and interested. You’re welcome :)

@mari_elle: From the pictures I saw on several sites, they’re usually bald and have some hair (like a tail) at the back of the head. His was something like that but grown out, making me think he probably hasn’t gone to his barber yet :)

@Angeli: Yes. I’m starting to be really interested about this whole Hare Krishna movement. Hehe ;)

Dude this is far out… I probably rode the same cab some months ago. I was already familiar with Hare Krishna and Jagad Guru from way back in college, so I struck up a conversation with the driver. It definitely beat having to listen to kukurukuku :p

  15. Gravatar kid Says:

@jorge: i’m gonna have to agree with you on that one. hehehe ;)

The repeating Hare Krishna you heard is a mantra specific to that movement and to Hinduism in general. It is akin to the rosary of the Catholics. Nothing so retarded about that.

There was a song popularized by Boy George before that had the mantra as a subtle background towards the chorus. That was sooo long ago. :-)

Being retarded on hearing to glorify God is great. But hearing mundane music is boring. that cab driver surely is Godly,,those who give comments against that driver in negation is Dogly!

    that mantra is potent!
